What Is Laryngectomy ? Laryngectomy is a procedure in which the larynx is removed. The larynx is the organ where the vocal chords originate; it is the organ responsible for emitting sound such as voice. The larynx is the organ that houses our voice box through which we produce sound. The larynx is also responsible for letting the air pass through the lungs to our mouth. Laryngectomy procedure influence speech, breathing, and swallowing. An individual who undergoes the procedure may have to learn new techniques to carry out those three tasks after a laryngectomy. People who suffer from a certain condition may undergo laryngectomy and this are: - Severe injury to the neck such as stab wound - Cancer of the larynx - Radiation necrosis Laryngectomy may be performed partially or a complete procedure depending on the condition.
