What Is Laryngectomy ?

 Laryngectomy is a procedure in which the larynx is removed. The larynx is the organ where the vocal chords originate; it is the organ responsible for emitting sound such as voice. The larynx is the organ that houses our voice box through which we produce sound. The larynx is also responsible for letting the air pass through the lungs to our mouth.

Laryngectomy procedure influence speech, breathing, and swallowing. An individual who undergoes the procedure may have to learn new techniques to carry out those three tasks after a laryngectomy.
People who suffer from a certain condition may undergo laryngectomy and this are:

- Severe injury to the neck such as stab wound
- Cancer of the larynx
- Radiation necrosis
Laryngectomy may be performed partially or a complete procedure depending on the condition. Our throat contains different parts such as the trachea, the esophagus, and the larynx. The trachea is the tube where air passes through in order for us to breathe. The esophagus is the tube where food passes through. The larynx is responsible for the sound that we make, it is where the voice box is located. These tubes have a merging part when an individual have a functioning voice box. The voice box is placed in the mid-section of the trachea, along with the lungs and the mouth. The procedure of laryngectomy is to remove the voice box which could result to cutting the connection between the lungs and mouth.

Laryngectomy procedure may take a long time. It usually took between five to nine hours to perform the whole procedure. Normally, general anesthesia is given in accordance to the procedure. General anesthesia is given in order for the patient to fall asleep in the entirety of the procedure.
The medical team will perform a series of tests and consultations before initial surgery to assess the patient's health. The medical team include speech therapists and swallowing specialists who will teach the patient cope up after laryngectomy. These methods include:

- Standard blood work
- Physical exam
- Counselling regarding smoking cessation
- Nutritional counselling
- Stopping medication temporarily
- Fasting before surgery
Undergoing laryngectomy, the voice box is removed and then the doctor will form the stoma. It is a permanent hole in front of the trachea in order for the patient to breathe.

Supplements are necessary for the general well-being and prevention of undergoing laryngectomy procedure.
